The Southwark Archives

SE1 Community Newspaper Collection

SE1 reported news other papers did not print. From 1975 to 1991 teams of volunteers wrote and produced SE1 for the south London neighbourhoods of Waterloo and North Southwark. It’s 147 issues tell the stories of people’s fights to improve housing conditions, protect jobs, improve local services and build a sense of history and community.

This site has been created by SE1 Stories in collaboration with Southwark Archives. SE1 Stories is a group of volunteers who were involved with the SE1 community newspaper and with other local community action groups in the 1970s and early 80s.

Southwark Archives holds a collection of nearly all the issues of SE1 and of the photographs associated with them. SE1 Stories has been working with them to record the backstory to the collection and highlight its relevance to today.

This site includes every the issue of SE1 by drawing on the Southwark collection and from our members’ personal archives.

The PDF of each individual issue is searchable but there is no feature at this stage for searching the whole collection. The website is a temporary home to provide access to the newspapers now while a fully fledged database site is being built by Southwark Archives.
